President Aquino has signed a law that bans children riding motorcycles on major thoroughfares. Under Republic Act 10666, no child should be on a motorcycle "where there is heavy volume of vehicles, there is a high density of fast-moving vehicles or where a speed limit of more than 60 km/h is imposed."

The new law was signed on July 21, after the Senate and House of Representatives passed the measure last May 27. This applies to children who cannot wrap their arms securely around an adult and those who cannot comfortably rest their feet on the foot pegs. Under RA 10666, children who are able to wrap around the rider and rest their foot on the pegs are required to wear helmets.

There will be fines handed out to those who violate RA 10666. For the first offense, violators will be fined Php 3,000. For the second offense, a Php 5,000 fine will be given to the rider. The third offense nets a Php 10,000 fine along with a one month driver's license suspension. If apprehended for the fourth time, the rider's license will be automatically revoked.
