Technical partnership to support Aston Martin’s development of new platform for future models

Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG have announced a technical and supply partnership between the two companies. This confirms rumors about an impending partnership between the British sports car company and Daimler AG, parent company of Mercedes-AMG. A Letter of Intent has been signed by the two companies and are working towards finalizing the agreement before the year ends.

Under the proposed deal, Daimler will own up to 5% non-voting shares in Aston Martin. The German automaker will join Investment DAR, Adeem Investment and Investindustrial as shareholders of the British carmaker. Aston Martin in turn will get tap Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Benz resources to develop V8 engines and utilize electric/electronic architecture.

“We have selected AMG specifically as the basis for this powertrain development process. Aston Martin sources cutting edge technology from key suppliers around the globe and the opportunity to include content from Mercedes-AMG GmbH in our next generation sports cars is, clearly, good news.” said Ian Minards Aston Martin Product Development Director

The British company, which celebrates its centenary this year will continue to build its cars at its Gaydon headquarters in Warwickshire, England.

“Working with Mercedes-AMG in this waywhile, of course, remaining independent and preserving the unique character and style of Aston Martin that has been the mainstay of the company throughout its 100-year history, points to a very bright future for the company as it starts its second century in business,” added Minards.

The technical partnership aims to support Aston Martin’s development of new platforms for future models. The next-generation sports cars will incorporate cutting edge technology and newly-developed bespoke V8 powertrains. Engineering teams of both companies will collaborate on optimizing the implementation of the partnership.

“We are proud to work with Aston Martin and provide them with powertrain and e/e components for their forthcoming sports cars. This is proof of AMG’s technological and performance expertise and a real win-win situation for both sides,” said Ola Källenius, Head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Both companies will announce more details as the partnership is finalized.
