The Audi Sport quattro concept takes evolutionary step with new laserlight concept to be unveiled at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week. The laser light technology recently made its debut with the Audi R18 e-tron quattro LMP1 car for the carmaker's 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) campaign

The Sport quattro concept initially made its debut as a metallic yellow coupe at 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, but has since been updated with a new Plasma Red paint scheme. The car measures at 4,602 mm long, 1,964 mm wide, 1,386 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,784 mm. It features a toughly body with short overhangs set over large center-locking five-spoke 21-inch wheels.

The front is characterized by 'quattro-style' dual headlights with low profile trapezoidal elements, featuring matrix LED and laser light technologies. The powerful laser diodes which measure a few microns in diameter promises twice the lighting range and three times the luminosity of LED high beam lights.

Inside, the concept features a driver-centric cockpit with future sporty production solutions. The front seats are folding race car shell seats with high lateral supports. The large TFT display for the MMI and vehicle control gives high-resolution, three-dimensional graphics thanks to the Nvidia Tegra 30 processor. It also comes with a new intuitive user interface that gives a more user friendly experience.

For handling, the concept features a five-link front suspension, while the rear is based on the self-tracking trapezoidal link principle of Audi, this is combined with stiff tuning of the springs and shock absorbers to make driving experience even more multifaceted. It also features dynamic steering which changes the steering ratio depending on driving speed. Braking is provided by large multi-piston calipers and carbon-ceramic brake discs, and the tire size is 285/30 R 21.

Using CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) and aluminum to complement its dynamic performance, Audi has achieved a light weight of 1,850 kg including the battery pack. The 300-liter boot also features a large cross bar stiffener.

The concept pays tribute to the 1980s Audi quattro sports coupe which gave birth to the legendary rally car driven by the likes of Walter Rohl, Michele Mouton, Stig Blomqvist and Hannu Mikkola. It also points to the future with new technologies like a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, futuristic user control and display interfaces, and laser lighting technology.

"The new show car demonstrates technical 'Vorsprung' on many levels," says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg.

Using e-tron technology combined with its 4.0-liter twin turbo V8, it is capable of 700 PS and 800 Nm of torque, while being very frugal with a fuel mileage of 40km/liter. The engine is mated to an 8-speed tiptronic. It also comes with cylinder deactivation technology, start-stop technology, and can run on pure electric mode with a peak output of 150 PS and 400 Nm of torque. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7-seconds with a top speed of 305 km/h.
