With a sales increase of 8.3 % in the US, German luxury carmaker Audi ays it will be focusing on Allroad models as well as SUV's in the future. Sales for Audi SUV's jumped 24.1% and the company is now on its 54th consecutive month in breaking sales records.
Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, has made it clear that the company will be focusing on launches of crossovers and SUVs in the coming years. Stadler told Automotive News Europe that forecasts show the U.S. and global markets are further shifting towards utility vehicles. Stadler added, “The popularity of its sport utility line is serving to extend and strengthen the Audi brand, because each Audi SUV expresses the spirit of Audi just as every sedan does.”
Forecasts predict that 32 % of new car launches from 2016 to 2019 will be crossovers and Audi wants a significant chunk of the sales.
At the moment, Audi's SUV lineup features the Q3, Q5 and Q7. The three luxury SUV's racked in significant sales for the brand during the first half of the year. The popular Q5 saw a sales increase of 8.7% while the Q3 saw sales of over 6,200 units. Despite being due for an all-new model, sales for the Q7 increased by 1.1%. An all new Q7 is due by early 2016 but the current generation model shows no signs of slowing down just yet.
Audi also plans to further extend the SUV lineup in the future. Stadler has said that Audi plans to build a Q1 subcompact crossover beginning next year. With regards to the company's e-Quattro technology, the company also plans to build an electric powered sporty crossover by 2018. Lastly, a range topping Q8 is in the works and Stadler sets 2019 as its launch date.
"Globally, we will respond proactively to the growing number of customers who enjoy SUVs’ higher driving position and their sense of enhanced safety,” said Stadler. He also added, “Regardless of the size of the SUV, we strive to be the most sought-after model in the segment, our SUVs are not utilitarian off-roaders; they are true premium vehicles, particularly in terms of interior fit and finish.”
