Beijing 2014: Volkswagen Golf R 400 concept unveiled

Design is a tribute to the supercharged Golf Rallye G60 of the 1980s

Volkswagen has unleashed the Golf R 400 concept at the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

The carmaker says, the '400' in its name stands for the 400 PS its 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder TSI engine produces, 100 PS more than the standard Golf R. The engine also makes 450 Nm of torque, 70 Nm more than the R.

The company said the one-off engine is based on the company's World Rally Car engine and is mated to a 6-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. The power is coursed through Volkswagen's 4MOTION four-wheel-drive system.

Weighing 1,420 kg, the Golf R 400 has a power-to-weight ratio of 3.55 PS per kilogram and goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 280 km/h.

Other driver aids include the EDS electronic differential locks, the XDS+ system – which brakes the wheels at the inside of a bend during fast driving – and ESC electronic stability control.

It also has lowered sport suspension, similar to the Golf R, with 19-inch wheels all around that are specially designed to help cool the uprated brakes.

The Golf R 400 is painted in 'Silver Flake' with a black roof, carbon-fiber-effect splitters and genuine, carbon-fiber, side-mirror caps.

At the front, the prominent, carbon-effect front splitter, which the company said is “a modern interpretation of the legendary Rallye Golf G60,” contrasts with the 'Lemon Yellow' grille inserts.

Moving down the side, the Golf R 400 looks similar to the Golf R, except for the significantly flared wheel arches that accommodate the much wider, 235-series tires.

At the back, the rear bumper reflects the front bumper's carbon-effect trims and incorporates a carbon-effect diffuser with two exhaust pipes sticking out of the middle of the diffuser, like the original Golf R32. It is topped off with a large double spoiler.

Inside, the Golf R 400 is a strict four-seater, with black Nappa leather and Alcantara trim abound. Lemon Yellow stitching and carbon-fiber finishers complement the exterior's theme.
