Lexus arrived at this year's Beijing International Auto Exhibition with the updated 2016 IS. Sporting subtle exterior revisions, along with an improved interior finish, Lexus claimed the D-segment sedan retained its signature look while incorporating new updates that make the most out of the luxury four-door.
Starting with the front fascia, it gets a new bumper with larger integrated air intakes that seamlessly flow towards the front fenders. The headlights gets minor tweaks as well, giving it a more defined look. Also present are new L-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) that resemble the ones used on the RC coupe.
The F Sport variant's spindle grill features a new 3-dimensional F-mesh pattern that is coated in Jet Black Metallic and has functional brake ducts. According to Lexus, these ducts improves the car's aerodynamic properties.
Viewed from the side, it gets redesigned ten spoke 17-inch alloy wheels that will be available in several new bright machine finishes. Completing the exterior updates are the: more pronounced L-shaped LED taillights, new rectangular chrome exhaust pipes that replace the previous circular design, and two new paint finishes; Deep Blue Mica and Black Glass Flake.
Inside, it gets a larger infotainment screen that measures 10.3-inches (previously 7-inches) that Lexus claimed will deliver clearer images. The center audio and climate controls have been repositioned as well to fit seamlessly with the knee bolsters. A new 'Enter' button has been installed beside the Remote Touch Interface (RTI) for better ergonomics.
There are also new colors available for the interior upholstery including Nuance Black, Noble Brown and Chateau which replaces the previous Ivory and Moonstone. Other changes inside the 2016 IS are: new cup holders, larger leather-wrapped palmrest for the RTI and new inlays on the dashboard clock.
In terms of powertrain, the 2016 IS will use the carried-over engines from the pre-updated model. First is the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. It produces 244 PS at 4,800 – 5,600 rpm along with 350 Nm of torque available at 1,650 – 4,000 rpm. Next is the 3.5-liter V6 that doles out 310 PS at 6,400 rpm and 375 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
For the hybrid IS, called the IS300h, it is powered by a 2.5-liter inline-four that is assisted by an electric motor. It has a combined output of 220 PS and is connected to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The 2016 Lexus IS now also comes standard with the Lexus Safety System. It is comprised of a Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beam (AHB) and Radar Cruise Control.
