Remember when the Department of Public Works and Highways opened the Kalayaan Bridge last June? While it now allows motorists to easily get from Pasig/Mandaluyong to Makati/BGC (and vice versa), the BGC-Ortigas Center Link Road, which aims to provide a direct route towards 8th Avenue in BGC, has yet to be completed.
But when can motorists coming from Pasig get to BGC via the Kalayaan Bridge? According to the DPWH, they're aiming to finish the new segment in September 2021.
In a statement, DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said that they are now completing the viaduct segment across Kalayaan Avenue, Makati City towards BGC's 8th Avenue. The DPWH Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations are already working around the clock as they plan to finish the BGC- Ortigas Center Link Road by Q3 of 2021.
In his report to Secretary Villar, Undersecretary for UPMO Operations Emil K. Sadain said that piers on bored piles for the elevated structure along 8th Avenue are already complete. Furthermore, several pre-fabricated girders on the horizontal support structure of the slabs have been installed on top of the piers. Sadain added that contractor Persan Construction has also started building the lean concrete retaining wall for the approach ramp at 8th Avenue.
Once work on the new segment of the bridge is complete, motorists that need to travel between Pasig and Taguig can directly take the viaduct that will connect with 8th Avenue in BGC. More importantly, the DPWH estimates that travel time between BGC and the Ortigas Central Business District will be cut down to just 12 minutes.
