BMW debuts 6-Series Gran Coupe

Getting in on the action

BMW seems to want to get in on the sportback 4-door “coupe” fight amidst the likes of the Merc CLS and Audi A7 with their latest niche model: the BMW 6 series Gran Coupe.

The Gran Coupe is the third in the 6 Series line up following the coupe and the convertible, and is the first 4 door coupe in the brand's history. The new 6 series Gran Coupe demonstrates BMW's ongoing commitment to broadening the diversity of its model range, combining BMW's brand values of sporty driving pleasure, elegant design, exclusive interior ambience, travel comfort and practicality

The design of the car points towards the identity of BMW's 6-series, albeit with 2 more doors in the back and a different take on the Hofmeister kink. The car has been engineered with lightness in mind, as BMW constructed several panels such as the doors and hood with lightweight aluminum.

The interior has been designed and appointed to be driver focused and luxurious as a grand tourer should. High-quality and extensive standard equipment includes an eight-speed sports automatic transmission, Auto Start-Stop function, Dynamic Damper Control, cruise control with braking function, electrically operated, automatically folding and heated exterior mirrors, Dakota leather upholstery and heated front seats, electric seat adjustment with memory function for the driver and front passenger, 2-zone automatic climate control with extended features, automatically dimming exterior and rear-view mirrors, electric steering wheel adjustment, and the Radio Professional with HiFi loudspeaker system and USB audio interface.

The 6 series Gran Coupe is debuting as the 640i, 640d and the 650i, with either a 320 horsepower inline-6 (640i), a 313 hp inline-6 diesel (640d), or as a 450 horsepower V8 (650i). TwinPower turbo technology, EfficientDynamics and direct injection are standard, with the V8 getting twin turbos.
