Now seems to be a good time to be a BMW fan in the country. The 3 Series range is now complete (more or less), the new generation 1 Series and 2 Series are out, and the 5 Series is having solid sales. But BMW Philippines isn't done yet.
For quite some time now, the company has been quietly offering the 8 Series, and it's not just any version either. What BMW Philippines has on hand is the top-dog M850i xDrive. No other variant is offered meaning the one they sell here is the model that's just right below the full-blown M8.
While it's not like the V12-powered 850i from the '90s, this new M850i xDrive packs a lot of punch. It uses a 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 from the 7 Series and M550i xDrive, but it's been tuned to put out more power than the aforementioned sedans. Instead of 462 PS and 650 Nm of torque, the twin-turbo V8 in the M850i doles out 530 PS and 750 Nm of torque. That means it has 68 PS and a whopping 100 Nm more than the already potent sedans. It then shifts with an eight-speed Sport Automatic transmission.
For comparison basis, the 850i from the '90s made 300 PS and 450 Nm of torque. This new twin-turbocharged V8 packs even more power than the potent 850 CSi which made 381 PS and 550 Nm of torque.
Other goodies? It comes out of the showroom with the M Sport styling kit, giving it a more aggressive look. A deeper front apron, larger air intakes and outlets, bigger wheels, and a lower stance are all part of the package. The interior gets a unique look too with subtle trim changes and deeper bucket seats hinting at its sportier intentions. Also, the suspension tuning is specific to this model.
The price? This sporting grand tourer starts at Php 13,490,000, making it the most expensive car in BMW Philippines' stable at the moment. The other car that goes past the Php 10 million mark is the 740Li at Php 10,490,000.
