BMW officially debuts 2018 6 Series Gran Turismo

BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo replaces the 5 Series GT

BMW continues their new car onslaught with the latest reveal of their 5 Series GT replacement. Taking the place of the fastback 5 Series is the 6 Series Gran Turismo. This model is the first of the all-new 6 Series line.

Like the model that preceded it, the 6 Series Gran Turismo a larger, higher-roofed fastback version of the 5 Series sedan. It also sits on a longer wheelbase than the car it is based on. At the front, we see another variation of BMW's current design philosophy. Large wraparound headlights merge into the wider and bolder kidney grill with the light's corona rings sporting a more angular look.

On to its side, the roofline is sleeker than the car it replaces with a steeply raked windshield and a swoopier roofline. Like current BMW models, the 6 Series Gran Turismo features an air outlet on the fender. Also, this particular model is one of the few modern BMW's not to have a defined 'Hoffmeister Kink', a design signature of the brand since the 1960's.

At the rear are a pair of slimmer, rounder tail lights with LED lighting technology. The tailgate is also angled more aggressively to give the car a sportier look. Overall, it is an evolutionary redesign from its predecessor. Seen here is the M Sport model which gives it unique front and rear bumpers and side mouldings.

Inside, it is largely carried over from the 5 Series from the dashboard, all the war to the door panels. For this model however, BMW raised the seating position when compared to its sedan counterpart. BMW adds that there is a boost in cargo capacity, thanks in part to its liftback design. With the extended wheelbase, there is also more room for rear passengers. All models  come standard with Dakota leather upholstery, which can be specified in a range of different colors. The optional Nappa leather with decorative quilting pattern is available in three colors – Ivory White, Black and Mocha.

The lone engine offering in the meantime is a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six. It generates 340 PS and 450 Nm of torque and then shifts via an eight-speed automatic transmission. No manual transmissions are available. Rear wheel drive is the standard layout with xDrive all-wheel drive being an option.

As for the underchassis, all models come standard with air suspension at the rear. There is also a Dynamic Handling Package which adds Dynamic Damper Control and adds air suspension at the front. Also included in the package is Active Roll Stabilization which lessens the body lean while cornering.
