Propelled by a 4.4-liter V8 that churns out 575 PS and 750 Nm of torque
BMW recently unveiled their latest generation M sports activity vehicles, the 2015 X5 M and the X6 M. Both cars according to BMW will combine the characteristic features that made the BMW X Family successful - 'exclusivity, robustness, agility and everyday usability – the commitment to high performance that defines an M vehicle'.
Outside, both the X5 M and X6 M sport an aggressively styled front end that is comprised of the brand's signature kidney grill design, large air intakes, distinctive headlights and foglamps. At the side, twin stalk-style side mirrors offset the silhouette of both cars and are finished with a set of 21-inch M-specific wheels wrapped in Michelin Super Sport UHP tires. The rear also receives the aggressive demeanor as both have the sharp looking taillights and creases on the bumper design. A diffuser has been integrated onto the rear bumper and is accented by the M four-tailpipe exhaust system. The X5 M has a spoiler attached to the roofdeck while the X6 M has it placed on the decklid.
Inside, the 2 cars get M equipment as standard for the instrument cluster, leather steering wheel, aluminum gearshift paddles and gearshift lever. An optional heads-up display can be added that will show a M-specific display with gear indicator, rev band and shift lights. The seats are covered in Merino leather and are currently available in either red or brown colors. The dashboard on the other hand is finished in Nappa leather. An Alcantara headlining is stitched onto the ceiling while accenting the interior finish of both cars are a set aluminum trim strips.
The X5 M and X6 M share the a similar 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine that produces 575 PS between 6000 - 6500 rpm and 750 Nm of torque between 2200 - 5000 rpm. The power output is bumped up by 3% from the previous model while torque figures have gone up 71 Nm. The eight cylinder engine is then mated to a 8-speed M Steptronic transmission that transfers power to all 4 wheels. It can sprint from 0-97 km/h in 4.0 seconds and can reach an electronically limited top speed of 240 km/h.
In normal conditions, the xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system has a rear-biased torque split and only adjusts the power accordingly. Working in tandem with the AWD system is the Dynamic Performance Control that regulates the amount of torque between the rear wheels both under load and on overrun. The car's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) has been reworked and now also controls Brake Standby, Brake Drying and Fading Compensation.
For performance enthusiasts, a smartphone M laptimer app can be used in conjunction with either of the cars. The app can record speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, current gear, steering angle and accelerator position. The data gathered will let drivers analyze their driving style and can also be shared to other users by way of email or social networking sites.
