BMW officially previews X3 M, X4 M

They've been spied before but BMW has made it official. The company has released 'official spyshots' of two new high-performance crossovers: the X3 M and X4 M.

Lately, BMW has been launching high-performance versions of the crossovers, namely the X2 M35i and X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid. While BMW isn't new to the fast crossover game, it will be the first time these mid-sized crossovers will get the M treatment as well. Once out in the market, it will go up against the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and Porsche Macan Turbo.

Powering the M versions of the X3 and X4 is a twin-turbocharged, inline-six engine. At the moment, BMW has yet to say how much power the motor makes but it is likely that it will be a new 3.0-liter unit. Given that its rivals make over 400 horsepower, we're expecting the same from the new M-powered crossovers.

The cars were developed around the Nurburgring, so there are a lot of tweaks to the suspension. Most noticeable is the drop in ride height, as well as larger brakes. BMW added that the all-wheel drive systems on both have been overhauled and re-engineered for their more sporting purpose. It is yet to be known if the X3 M and X4 M will get the M5's pure rear-wheel drive mode, but there is a possibility.

No interior shots have been made public just yet but expect M division touches such as deeper bucket seats, thicker steering wheel, carbon fiber trimmings and, of course, M badges. For its exterior, it's still wearing camouflage but the details are now mostly seen. There's the obligatory M bumpers with their larger intakes at the front and integrated diffuser at the rear. Both ride on Y-spoke alloy wheels as well.

More details will be revealed soon.
