BYD made a lot of breakthroughs in terms of safety and charging efficiency with its patented Blade battery technology.

This time though, the brand is on a mission to solve the two issues that have held back the adoption of EVs. BYD has revealed the second-generation Blade battery, which was developed with the aim of bringing EV recharging times closer to the speed of refueling a gasoline vehicle.

BYD claims the second-generation Blade battery enables recharging times from 10% to 70% SOC in as little as five minutes, and up to 97% in nine minutes. This was made possible with the help of another new development from BYD, which is the Flash charger – a fast-charging facility with a maximum output of 1500 kW, or up to 10x more powerful than the usual DC charging stations we have in the country.

The second-gen Blade battery is the result of six years of BYD’s research and development, and has passed safety tests that exceed Chinese national standards, significantly improving charging speed, driving range, and safety.

The Denza Z9 GT is the first BYD model to have the second-generation Blade battery, achieving a maximum driving range of 1,036 km in one charge.

The Flash charging facility, on the other hand, enables fast charging while avoiding power grid capacity limitations as it integrates solar, storage, and charging, making it possible to build an efficient charging infrastructure without placing excessive strain on local power networks.

It uses the world's first T-shaped pulley charging system, and its "zero gravity design" allows the connector to be lifted with light operation. Charging is possible from either the left or right side of the vehicle, and the cable does not touch the ground, ensuring cleanliness.

For now, BYD has its home market in its sights first for the Flash charging facility. The brand plans to build 20,000 Flash charging stations across China by the end of 2026.
