President Duterte graces groundbreaking of Php 27.9-billion CCLEX project
As traffic congestion in Cebu City continues to rise, a new bridge has begun construction in order to decongest the vehicular traffic overload on the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge and the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.
President Rodrigo Duterte, last week, graced the groundbreaking of the Php 27.9-billion Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) that will be the third bridge connecting Cebu City to Mactan via the town of Cordova.
"Maybe in the years to come, we will see a nation with bridges, connect-connecting short distances. But the far and between the wide expanse of the sea, it will take generation,” said Duterte.
The President mentioned that one of the factors that led him to approving the CCLEX project was because 1.4 million of the more than the 16 million total votes he got came from Cebu.
CCLEX is a joint venture with the Metro Pacific Tollways Development Corp. (MPTDC) and the local governments of Cebu City and Cordova town. It will be built at no cost to the national and local governments involved in the project.
Construction of CCLEX is expected to generate 5,000 jobs and is set to be completed by 2020.
MPTDC chair Manny V. Pangilinan said a fourth bridge linking Cebu and Mactan could be built within the next 20 years and another connecting Cebu to Bohol and Negros Island, and Bohol to Leyte are being considered.
