BMW arrived at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) with a new concept that aims to change how an intelligent, self-driving car should be. Called the i Vision Future Interaction concept, BMW stated that it will 'provide an outlook on the networked cockpit and the user interface of the future'.

Based on the i8 Spyder concept, the high-tech roadster features an array of high-resolution displays, sensors that can detect hand gestures/movements, wireless connectivity and a self-driving function.

Stepping inside the concept car, users are immediately greeted by a 21-inch touchscreen panoramic display. The screen can be used to browse the internet, adjust the car's settings or watch videos. It also has AirTouch sensors, allowing users to manipulate the screen via hand gestures.

Beyond that, it also has a high-tech instrument cluster that features 3D display. It will also convey important details about other vehicles or objects on the road. Rounding it all of is a heads-up display.

Integration with another BMW i car, smartphone, smart watch or smart home can also be done by way of the onboard Open Mobility Cloud. There is also the Mobility Mirror which acts as a personal assistant. It can display a personal calendar, energy status of the home, weather forecast, charge level of the i3 and others.

The steering wheel, on the other hand, has three drive modes; Pure Drive, Assist and Auto Mode. The first mode allows the driver to personally take control of the car while the second mode activates certain safety features that can intervene while driving. Finally, the last mode activates the car's autonomous driving function.

During Auto Mode, the steering wheel moves forward, providing better legroom for the driver. The sits then adjust to deliver a lounge-like setting, enabling a better view of the panoramic display.
