New-generation Chevy Spark gets new 1.4L Ecotec, CVT option
The Covenant Car Company Inc. (TCCCI), the official distributor of Chevrolet cars in the country, has released new details of their new A-segment contender, the 2017 Spark. Set to make its official debut at this year's Manila International Auto Show (MIAS), the next-gen hatchback receives a major makeover both inside and out, along with a new powertrain.
First revealed at the 2015 New York Auto Show, the all-new Spark departs from its rounded shape for a sleeker, more aggressive look. The new Spark gets new headlights, as well as a more refined dual-port front grill. Top-spec variants have LED daytime running lights (DRLs), as well as projector halogens. LT variants are equipped with reflector halogens. Also new are the foglights which come as standard on high-end models and heated, power folding side mirrors which are standard across the range.
Newly-designed 15-inch alloy wheels also make their way in the 2017 Spark and is only available in the high-end LTZ variant. On the other hand, smaller 14-inch wheels will come as standard on the lesser LT variants. The distinct window-mounted door handles for the rear doors have been retained, however, preserving the Spark's three-door hatch look. Finishing it all off are the quarter-flanking taillights and the new tailgate which comes with an integrated spoiler.
Inside, the 2017 Spark features an all-new cabin design which conforms with the bow-tie brand's current theme. All variants of the new Spark will come with a new 7-inch MyLink touchscreen infotainment system. It supports several inputs like Aux, USB, Bluetooth and the like. Audio is then routed through six speakers.
A three-spoke steering wheel with audio controls comes as standard equipment, along with a multi-info display. All seats are upholstered in Jet Black cloth, with the top-spec LTZ being spruced up with piano black accents as well. Manual air-conditioning, front cupholders, a 12V socket and 60:40 split folding rear seats also make their way in the 2017 Spark.
Other in-car features included in the 2017 Spark are: central locking, ISOFIX child seat anchors for the rear seats, a rear window defogger and traction control (only for LTZ version).
Under the hood is a new engine, a 1.4-liter Ecotec inline-four with DOHC and dual variable valve timing (DVVT). It produces 99 PS at 6200 rpm and has a maximum pulling power of 128 Nm at 4400 rpm. The range-topping LTZ version is exclusively married to a new continuously variable transmission (CVT). Meanwhile, the LT variant can be had with either the CVT or a 5-speed manual gearbox. Also worth mentioning is the new electronic power steering which is available throughout the model range.
The LTZ has a 35-liter fuel tank while the LT gets a smaller 32-liter fuel tank. Size-wise, the 2017 Spark comes in at 3,635mm long, 1,595mm wide and 1,483mm tall. The wheelbase measures 2,385mm.
The 2017 Spark will make its official debut at this year's Manila International Auto Show which will run from March 30 – April 2.
