Earlier this morning, we reported that Suzuki Philippines was planning to launch a new Vitara for 2021. Initially, we were not entirely sure if they were going to reveal a new variant or a special edition model, but now we know.

We have just confirmed via a Suzuki executive that it will indeed be a new variant of the crossover. Unfortunately it's not the turbocharged Boosterjet version that many customers (including us), have been clamoring for, but it's just as interesting.

So what is it? Well, Suzuki has officially confirmed that they will be launching the Vitara AllGrip this coming May 28, 2021. Basically, the AllGrip variant is the all-wheel-drive (AWD) version of the Vitara.

But instead of just having a typical all-wheel-drive system, Suzuki's AllGrip system actually has four selectable modes to choose from. First is Auto which sets the drivetrain to just 2WD (i.e. front-wheel-drive). When the system senses the front wheels slipping, a viscous coupling system sends torque to the rear wheels for additional grip.

Next up is Sport Mode which sets the traction system to intervene less to achieve faster acceleration and quicker turning. Then there's Snow Mode, which provides a permanent 50:50 torque split between the front and rear axles. This makes driving on slippery or unpaved roads easier.

Last but not least is Lock Mode wherein torque is distributed evenly across all four wheels. In addition, the traction control system applies the brakes that are spinning without traction and sends all available power to tires that are gripping.

Other details regarding the new Vitara AllGrip are still unannounced, but it will reportedly still have a 1.6-liter gasoline engine like the GLX variant. With the turbocharged Boosterjet not coming to the Philippines, then the naturally-aspirated M16A will likely be the engine of choice for the AllGrip version.

Pricing has not yet been revealed as well for the Vitara AllGrip. But given that it has all-wheel-drive, expect it to be pricier than the GLX which already retails for PHP 1.158 million. Perhaps it might even sell for around PHP 1.4 million.

The 2021 Suzuki Vitara will be launched this coming Friday at 6:00 PM live on Suzuki PH's official Facebook page.
