The much-awaited 2019 Suzuki Jimny still has a long way to go before it makes its way to the Philippines.  First previewed during the 2018 Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS), the company said that the new 4x4 could arrive at around Q3 of 2019 and could top out at Php 1.1 million. Why the long wait?

For one, demand for the all-new Jimny is still high. Last we’ve heard, the waiting period in Japan alone is still at one year. And number two, the fourth-generation Jimny is currently being built in just one factory.

However, Keiichi Suzuki, the General Manager for Automobiles in Suzuki Philippines, shared with us that the company is currently speeding up production of the new Jimny at their Kosai plant in Japan.

“In our home market alone, the waiting period for a new Jimny has increased to more than one year. To keep up with the demand, our Kosai plant has increased production output. That way, we can deliver the units in Japan faster, as well as export the new 4x4 faster in other markets besides ours” said Suzuki.

When asked whether the company plans on initiating some of the Jimny’s production to another factory within or outside of Japan, Suzuki said that they have no plans to transfer it elsewhere besides Kosai.

“While it would greatly help in meeting customer demand, we would like to maintain the Japanese build quality that has made the Jimny a tough and reliable 4x4. Also, if we shifted production elsewhere, our local suppliers will also have a hard time shipping their components to another factory, not to mention the added costs of logistics,” added Suzuki.

The company is still optimistic that they will be able to bring the new Jimny to the Philippines by Q3 of this year. But with Suzuki ramping up production in the Kosai factory, we’re hoping that the new 4x4 will be able to arrive sooner than later.

In the meantime, while we’re still waiting for its official launch in the country, you can check out our first impressions of the 2019 Suzuki Jimny during last year’s Auto Focus Pre-Christmas Drive Festival.
