Several weeks ago the 2020 Jeep Compass officially made its debut in the country. Priced at PhP 1,850,000, the compact crossover offers five seats and comes with a wide array of standard features like Apple CarPlay, double sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, touchscreen infotainment, as well as a bevy of safety features.
Locally, the Compass is powered by a small turbocharged engine, the 1.4-liter MultiAir inline-four. Despite its small displacement, the engine does put out a respectable 162 PS and 250 Nm of torque, on par with competitors that have bigger, naturally-aspirated four-cylinder.
All well and good, but Jeep wants to go even smaller when it comes to building engines. Over in Europe, the 2021 Compass has just been launched and it gets an even smaller 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.
The new engine is available in two states of tune, 130 PS and 150 PS for the top-of-the-line model. The 130 PS version is only available with a six-speed manual while the more powerful 150 PS is hooked up to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Torque, on the other hand, is at 270 Nm, 10 Nm more than what the 1.4-liter produces.
For those that prefer a plug-in hybrid version of the new turbocharged engine, there's the 4xe. The 1.3-liter turbocharged engine gets a helping hand from an electric motor which gives it a total system output of either 190 PS or 240 PS. Both versions only come with all-wheel drive.
Aside from the new 1.3-liter turbocharged engine, a 1.6-liter MultiJet II turbo-diesel is also available for the 2021 Compass. It makes 120 PS along with 320 Nm of torque. However, the diesel-fed Compass only comes with a six-speed manual and front-wheel-drive.
Will the Euro-spec Compass' 1.3-liter turbo make its way to PH-spec models of the Compass or the Renegade? Perhaps, since the new engine has been dubbed by Jeep FCA as the new Global Small Engine (GSE) family. But until then, it looks like both the Philippine-spec 2020 Renegade and Compass will continue to be powered by the 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four.
