Toyota Wigo twin, Daihatsu Ayla, gets a 200 horsepower boost

Most people know the Toyota Wigo as a small, sensible and affordable hatchback with the basic task of bringing people from point A to B. There are no thrills or frills, and it definitely doesn't have any performance intentions. Which is why its twin, the Daihatsu Ayla, made quite the surprise during this year's Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show.

The folks from Daihatsu gave the Ayla some serious performance credentials by adding a whole lot more horsepower to the small hatch. In stock form, the standard model has a three-cylinder, 1.0-liter engine with 66 horsepower. There's also the optional 1.2-liter, four-cylinder unit in other markets which makes 88 PS, but the concept has more than double the power of even the 1.2-liter mill.

For this concept, the Daihatsu Ayla Turbo makes 200 PS. While that may not sound like a lot, do keep in mind that a standard Ayla/Wigo just tips the scales at under 900 kilograms, giving this hotted up commuter car serious power to weight ratio figures. It uses the bigger engine option and the 1.2-liter motor gains a turbo and new pistons. Daihatsu didn't go into full detail as to how they got their power and performance figures.

They didn't just add power either. The Ayla Turbo concept gets a lowered suspension, and wider fender flares, suggesting that the underchassis has been given quite the upgrade. There's also a deep chin spoiler and a pair of side skirts. Stopping power comes courtesy of AP Racing, and it also gets semi-slick Achilles ATR-K Sport. Also, the window glass has been replaced by lighter, more durable plexiglass.

The weight reduction didn't stop with the windows either. The interior is mostly stripped out and the back seats make way for a roll cage. Sound deadening was also taken out from the already light small hatchback. Even the radio and air-conditioning were taken out of the car in an effort to simplify and reduce weight.

What are the odds of this pocket rocket reaching production? By the looks of things, it's unlikely but it does open the possibility of building your own 200 horsepower Toyota Wigo.
