The smallest sedan in MG's lineup has just received a sporty makeover. This is the 2021 MG5, and boy does it look sleek.
Borrowing styling cues from the MG6 (and maybe even a bit of Maserati), the four-door sedan gets a bolder-looking exterior and a coupe-like profile. Starting with its front fascia, it gets a massive front grille, a sporty front bumper, and a sleek set of headlights that give the MG5 an aggressive, and somewhat Maserati-like look.
The rear, on the other hand, appears to have been inspired by the MG6 with its distinct, claw-like taillights, and liftback-style rear. Finally, it gets new alloy wheels which further highlight the car's new look.
In terms of size, the new MG5 measures 4675mm long, 1842mm wide, 1480mm tall, and a 2680mm wheelbase. Side-by-side with the current model, and the redesigned sedan is 74mm longer while still retaining the wheelbase of the current model. It is, however, narrower by 24mm and 9mm shorter than the MG5 we have right now.
There are no details yet regarding its engine. However, it may still come with a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter engine that musters 114 PS and 150 Nm of torque. A more powerful turbocharged variant with 173 PS could be available although MG has yet to confirm if it will be offered on the MG5.
When can we expect the new MG5 to arrive in the Philippines? Well, MG is looking to launch the new sedan at the 2020 Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition (GIAE) later this November so it might be a while before it gets here. But with sales expected to start by the year's end, it could arrive in the Philippines in Q2 of 2021.
What we're not entirely sure about the 2021 MG5 is whether the sedan is just a facelift or a completely new model. Perhaps we'll know once MG reveals it at the 2020 GIAE.
