Good news to commuters and motorists who traverse EDSA on a daily basis. With several infrastructure projects close to completion this 2020, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said that motorists expect improvements on Metro Manila’s busiest thoroughfare very soon.
During a press briefing at Malacañan, DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said that traffic congestion in EDSA will improve by around 20 to 30% by the second half of 2020. Though it might be a small figure, Villar says the improvement that will be felt by motorists and commuters will be very big. He also adds that the government expects to see continued improvement along EDSA in the years to come.
Villar stated that the original capacity of EDSA is for only 280,000 vehicles daily. However, the volume of traffic today is at least 400,000 daily. Villar is confident though that by the end of President Duterte’s term, EDSA will be back to its original capacity.
The opening of Skyway Stage 3 will play a vital role in addressing traffic congestion along EDSA. Once complete, the 18.30-kilometer elevated expressway will cut travel time from Buendia, Makati to the North Luzon Expressway in Balintawak, Quezon City from 2 hours to just 15-20 minutes. It is also expected to relieve around 100,000 cars from EDSA. Some of the other road projects that are expected to help decongest EDSA include the NLEX Harbor Link, NLEX-SLEX Connector Road, C-5 South Link Expressway, and Bonifacio Global City-Ortigas Center Link Road Project.
“What can we expect sa EDSA congestion? By this year, by the second half of this year, we will relieve EDSA by 20 percent to 30 percent. Malaki po ang improvement sa EDSA. And for the first year starting this year and in subsequent years, we will see continued improvement along EDSA, per committed by our President. We’ll see every year, magkakaroon ng drastic improvement sa EDSA” said Villar.

Around 38 of the 100 infrastructure projects are expected to be completed by the end of Duterte’s term in 2022.
