Motorists adversely affected by the heavy vehicular traffic flow along EDSA and C-5 may soon find respite from the congestion some time July 2017 as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to increase the number of lanes on the bridge that connects Taytay, Rizal to Pinagbuhatan.
An additional two lanes are currently being added by the DPWH to Barkadahan Bridge and aims to open these lanes by July 2017. It may be some 8 kilometers away from C-5, but the widening of Barkadahan Bridge will positively affect traffic along the former and even EDSA.
"When completed, the widening of Barkadahan bridge along C-6 will ease traffic congestion at EDSA and C-5. It will also provide safe and convenient route to the travelling public in the eastern corridor," said DPWH Secretary Mark Villar.
The Barkadahan Bridge will complement the 10.7-kilometer Laguna Lake Highway project which was designed to reduce traffic between Taytay and Bicutan by 50-percent.
Two lanes of the Laguna Lake Highway traversing Napindan to M. L. Quezon section in Taguig City has already been opened by the DPWH last February 2017.
"Travelers between Rizal and Makati/Taguig would benefit the most from improvements of the road capacity as well as travel speeds along the Laguna Lake corridor," added Villar.
The DPWH aims to develop C-6 as a strategic alternate route for motorists in Metro Manila.
