If you want to build some of the most stylish cars in the world, you need to have an equally talented designer as well. That is probably why Chinese automaker Geely recently announced that Jaguar-Land Rover’s former chief designer and designer director, Wayne Burgess, will be heading their newly established Geely Design UK.
“The addition of Geely Design UK showcases Geely’s commitment to the UK and also shows Britain’s leading position in the areas of creativity and design. Wayne brings with him a wealth of experience in premium car design which will help us develop our brands,” said Peter Horbury, the Executive Vice President of Design for Geely Auto Group.
Burgess will bear the position of Head of Design and vice president at Geely Design UK which is based in Coventry. The design studio will soon expand to have around 100 designers and support staff within the next five years, and will support the ‘in-house functions’ of Geely Auto Group portfolio of brands. This includes not just Geely Auto, but also Lynk & Co, Proton, Lotus, and even the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC).
“Geely Design has moved quickly to establish itself over the past five years, growing to become one of the strongest teams in the automotive design field. I am looking forward to working closely with Peter and the wider Geely Design team,” said Burgess.
Prior to his work at JLR and Geely, Burgess graduated at Coventry University, back in 1992 before joining LTI Carbodies after graduating as a Senior Designer. He then joined Omni Design after before having his first stint at JLR in 1997. He then moved to Aston Martin Lagonda in 1999 as Senior Design Manager before finally moving to JLR once again in 2001 where in he has served with the company until 2018.
