We're expecting a lot of new crossovers, SUVs, and pick-ups launching in 2021. So far, we're anticipating 14 SUVs and crossovers, along with three pick-ups. That said, it doesn't mean we won't see new sedans and hatchbacks coming here.
With that, we might see Suzuki Philippines bucking that trend with a facelifted hatchback. In particular, there is a chance that they might launch the updated Swift later this year. That's because reports say it's about to roll out in Thailand, which is where we source the model.
The facelifted Swift first debuted in Japan back in May 2020. It saw a new mild-hybrid engine dubbed the DualJet with a slight power boost. It also saw a few cosmetic tweaks on the exterior and equipment updates inside. The Thai-built Swift, however, might not have the mild-hybrid engine and fewer feature updates.
So, what can we expect? The current engine could be a carryover from the present model. That means the 1.2-liter, four-cylinder engine might still make 82 PS and 113 Nm of torque. That said, we're hoping we get the 92 PS version of the same engine in our market. Also, we might see a new touchscreen installed for Southeast Asia-spec cars, and we'd like to see it with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The redesigned instrument cluster will likely appear in local-spec Swifts as well.
As for the exterior updates, it's relatively minor. As far as we can tell, there are no sheet metal changes. However, the grill now sports a different pattern, replacing the slats seen in the current model. There is a choice between a diamond pattern or a honeycomb design. Another minor tweak to Swift's cosmetics is the horizontal split that runs across its grill. Last but not least is a new wheel design for the entry-level version.
So, when will we see it here? For now, that is yet to be known, but its ASEAN debut in Thailand is set on February 2. With that, we might have to wait a few more months before we see it in our showrooms.
