The Ferrari 488 GTB officially made its Philippine debut today at the Autostrada Motore showroom in BGC, dealership of the distributor of Ferrari in the Philippines.
The new vehicle nods back to iconic Ferrari's of the past, like the 308 GTS, by positioning its engine in the mid-rear configuration. It also bears the scalloped side scoops, popularized by the model closely associated with American TV show, Magnum P.I. GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta, a reference to its deep roots in Ferrari history.
The 488 draws influences both from the LaFerrari and 458 Italia, as well. It carries over the long headlights from the later, while integrating F1 styling cues from the former in its facade. The grooved hood almost resembles an F1 front wing, while large intakes on the lower valence direct airflow to the front brakes. Towards the side, the scalloped scoop directs air toward the rear through a central partition. Behind, the air is directed over the blown rear spoiler on the rear deck. Below, air is channeled through the aerodynamic underbody with vortex generators. Air then flows out from the diffusers that creep higher up into the rear, necessitating the higher positioning of the tail pipes to aid aerodynamics. All told, the 488 generates as much as 325kg of downforce at 250 km/h, thanks in part to active aerodynamic devices.
Propelling the GTB is a new 3.9-liter engine, which is much smaller than its predecessor's 4.5-liter V8. It produces 100 more Ps than its the 458 Italia (670 Ps), however, thanks twin turbochargers; one for each bank. It also produces 40% more torque at 760 Nm. All this is done while still meeting stringent European emissions regulations. The engine is coupled with a seven-speed F1 dual-clutch gearbox and directs power to the rear wheels. It rides on 245/35 series 20 inch tires in front and 305/30 series 20 inch tires in the rear. This allows it to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.0 seconds, to 200 km/h in 8.0 seconds and on to a top speed of 330 km/h.
In spite of the awe-inspiring power, the vehicle is equipped with sophisticated dynamic vehicle controls to easily tame this massive power. Among them are High Performance ABS with Ferrari Pre-Fill, FrS SCM-E and Variable Boost Management which optimally distributes torque. It is also equipped with a new version of the Side Slip Control System (SSC2) which, aside from just integrating with the car’s F1-Trac and E-Diff3, now also controls the active dampers. This makes the Ferrari 488 GTB, even flatter and more stable during complex manoeuvres, so that less experienced drivers can enjoy its potential to the fullest.
Inside, the 488 GTB employs a centrally-mounted tachometer with LCD screens on either side. Controls for these screens have been moved to the sides of the driver's dashboard. Engine start, drive modes, and damper controls still remain on the wheel. There is no center LCD screen. Instead, in-car entertainment settings are on the driver's displays. The rest of the dashboard and interior features black and red technical fabric cabin trim.
The rear features a steeply raked windscreen that proudly displays the engine bay.
Trunk storage has now been moved to the front, capable of accommodating to airline carry-on size bags.
