When it comes to making one-offs, Ferrari always hits the mark. Whether it's for a customer that wants something out of this world or for a client that wants a retro-inspired stallion that runs on the latest hardware, the Maranello-based automaker lets its imagination run wild while keeping true to Ferrari's exquisite tastes.

The Ferrari Special Projects Programme has once again unveiled one heck of a creation. Say buon giorno to the Ferrari SC40, and it's the brand's love letter to the much revered Ferrari F40. It was commissioned by a special customer that wants the classic looks of the F40, albeit featuring softer curves and the plug-in hybrid powertrain of the 296 GTB.

The unique styling of the Ferrari SC40 draws directly from the 80s supercar with its long & low nose, short overhangs, a huge rear wing, and the centralized cockpit area. It's also painted in a unique shade simply called “SC40 White”, which complements the blacked-out elements on the bumpers, headlights, and door panels.

The headlights are placed at the far corners of the vehicle and are integrated in a black housing that extends downwards to the lower air intake. Since the intake spans the entire front bumper, it gives the SC40 a striking and assertive look that blends with the SC40's overall design. On the side, the classic NACA ducts have been reinterpreted by new intercooler air intakes that feature a large triangular carbon fiber plate. Combined with the lines that outline the edges of the front wings, door cuts, and engine cover, the SC40 looks sharp and clean without losing its visual appeal.

On the other hand, the twin-turbo V6 engine can be seen via the smoked Lexan louvers that pair nicely with the lower side air intakes and the muscular rear wings near the wheel arches. Combined with sculpted rear section, distinct LED taillights, and a central exhaust with titanium & carbon fiber tips, 296 GTB-based SC40 looks dynamic, purposeful, and sleek.

Hop inside, and the Ferrari SC40 welcomes its lucky owner with the heavy use of Kevlar. This is a callback to the F40's cabin that made heavy use of the lightweight yet durable synthetic material. In the SC40, it makes use of a carbon-kevlar finish has been reinterpreted and redeveloped for the project and has been applied in the footwells, behind the seats, and parts of the floormat. The material is also used on the steering wheel, parts of the dashboard, the luggage compartment, and the engine bay.

As far as upholstery is concerned, the SC40 features a combination of Charcoal Alcantara and a red Jacquard technical fabric. Topping everything off are the Prancing Horse on the headrests and the woven SC40 logo that give the seats an exclusive look.

At the heart of the Ferrari SC40 is the 296 GTB's powertrain. Its 3.0L twin-turbo V6 cranks out 663 PS and 740 Nm of torque. But thanks to an electric motor and a high-voltage 7.45 kWh battery pack, the SC40 generates a combined 830 PS at 8000 rpm. The engine is paired to an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox that allows the SC40 to sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of over 330 km/h.

With the SC40 serving as a one-off for a special customer, expect it to be a very rare sight on roads.
