It's not just the Hilux that celebrates its 50th anniversary this year; the Toyota Hiace also commemorates 50 years in 2018, making it a double celebration for Japan's top-selling automaker.
To commemorate this milestone for the Hiace, Toyota has unveiled a special edition model in their home market.
Dubbed the Hiace 50th Anniversary Limited, it's available in long and short wheelbase configurations, either with a wide or narrow body, as well as low or high roof. It complements the first special edition model they made earlier this year which is the retro-inspired Relaxbase edition.
For the Hiace 50th Anniversary Limited, it gets LED headlights as standard, along with a dark chrome grill. There's a 50th Anniversary badge on the tailgate as well. Dual power sliding doors are standard with pinch protection and even the key gets commemorative badging. From the outside, few details separate the 50th it from standard Hiace models. However, things are a little different inside.
The cabin gets faux wood decor along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Faux wood cappings are seen on the steering wheel, air-con and radio surrounds, gear selector and door arm rests. All the seats are trimmed in leather and there's even more of it on the door panels as well.
Illuminated scuff plates light up when the sliding doors are opened and taking a page from its passenger car lineup, the 50th Anniversary Hiace gets a push start button. Toyota Safety Sense is standard too and that means it gets automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and adaptive headlights.
As for the Hiace Relaxbase which was released earlier this year, changes are more substantial. The van pays tribute to past Hiace models and the Volkswagen Kombi. It gets a tri-tone exterior with matte black pillars and front garnish, white bumpers and the vehicle's body color. Foglight housings are also different from the standard models, which give the foglights themselves a more flushed look. Lastly, unique wheels are reminiscent of Hiaces of the 70's but instead of being steel-pressed, these are actually made from aluminum alloy.
