Subaru gives WRX new infotainment system, WRX STI gets 5 PS power bump

For the 2019 model, Subaru has dialed up the power of the WRX STI’s 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine. It now produces 310 PS, a 5 PS increase over the previous model, and now matches the same output as the limited edition WRX STI Type RA.

The power bump is courtesy of a new air intake coupled with a more high-flow exhaust system. Subaru has also tweaked the ECU and fitted stronger pistons to help increase engine performance. For faster acceleration, the Japanese automaker also fiddled with the six-speed manual transmission by revising the 3rdgear ratio.

With the 2019 WRX, the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine retains the same power output with 268 PS being produced. Both a 6-speed manual and the Sport Lineartronic CVT are still available. In place of a bump in performance, it does benefit from an upgraded infotainment system. The WRX now comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay Integration.

For the US-market, both the 2019 WRX and the WRX STI are being offered with a Series.Gray special edition models. Only 750 examples of the WRX will be offered and 250 units for the WRX STI.

The WRX Series.Gray is only available with a manual transmission and is based off the WRX Premium trim in the US. Setting it apart are the Cool Gray Khaki paint, 18-inch wheels and Crystal Black Silica badging. In the WRX STI, it sports a similar upgrade but is fitted with 19-inch wheels instead. It also comes with silver Brembo brake calipers instead of green and Recaro seats.

It is unlikely that the Series.Gray models will be offered outside of the United States.
