Ford launches the Mustang in the Philippines

The iconic pony car officially breaks out

Model overview

The Mustang is the most iconic car from Ford in the 20th century. At the forefront of the pony car revolution in the late 60's, the Mustang quickly became one of the most sought after models from Ford, so much so that many tuners like the late Carroll Shelby developed special models with even higher performance such as the GT500.

The 2013 Ford Mustang that Ford brings in is the 5th generation of the nameplate, a generation that has been on sale since 2005 and was redesigned in 2010. The Mustang, a classic front engine, rear wheel drive pony car, is manufactured at Ford's plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.

Exterior design and dimensions

Being the Mk. II version of the 5th generation Mustang, the new model is sleeker and more muscular than the one it replaced. The front of the car is forward swept and gives a powerful appearance, with the GT version getting foglamps on the main grille. The side profile sports the classic fastback look, while the rear end has been modernized with sequential LED taillamps and indicators.

The Mustang is 4,780mm long, 1,880mm wide and 1410mm tall. Ford Philippines is offering the coupe (fastback) variant, though the U.S. market also gets convertible versions. No word as of yet whether or not the drop top versions will be made available in the future.

The V8 GT gets 19 inch wheels while the V6 gets 17 inch rolling stock. The V8 also gets hood vents, a glass roof and GT emblems.

Interior design and features

The interior of the Mustang has been designed with purpose, function and style in mind. The premium dashboard and three spoke “retro” wheel gives the Mustang's cabin a high quality yet powerful air about it.

There's seating for 4 people, and since Ford Philippines is only bringing in the Premium versions, all seats are leather. The backseat can also fold down in a 50/50 fashion.

For entertainment, Ford's SYNC system is standard, giving the Mustang plenty of connectivity via Bluetooth, USB or other inputs. Climate control is also standard, along with the usual slew of comfort and convenience features. Cruise control is standard equipment while a sunroof is standard for the GT version.

Powertrain and suspension

Ford is making the Mustang available in two versions: the V6 and the V8 GT.

The V6 motor in the new Mustang is an entirely new engine displacing 3.7 liters. It may be smaller than the original 4.0 liter V6 in the 2005-2009 Mustang, but the new model produces a healthier 305 PS and 380 Newton meters thanks to Ti-VCT variable valve timing. The V6 gets a 6-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift switches on the gearstick.

The V8-powered Mustang GT is undoubtedly the cream of the crop. The current Mustang is the first production application of Ford's new 5.0 liter engine. The 8-cylinder motor produces 420 PS and 529 Newton meters of torque. The engine is matched with a 6R80 6-speed automatic transmission.

For those who love to tear down a 1,320 foot dragstrip, the Mustang GT gets Track Apps that can count you down and measure your quarter mile times, top speed and other data on an LCD between the two main gauges.

Safety and security

Being such a powerful machine, the Mustang comes with a long list of standard safety features such as ABS, multiple airbags, traction and stability control. Also, for the Mustang V8 GT, Ford Philippines has specified the car to come equipped with the far more powerful Brembo brake kit.

The list of equipment also includes a smart key, anti-theft systems, HID headlamps, a tire pressure monitoring system and many more.

Variants, prices and colors

The Mustang can be had in 5 colors, namely: Performance White, Race Red, Deep Impact Blue Metallic (GT exclusive color), Black (GT exclusive color) or Sterling Gray (V6 exclusive color).
