You may soon be giving commands to Siri’s using your cabin’s mic and speakers if your Ford is equipped the automaker’s SYNC system.

Ford Motor Company has just announced that models equipped with the second-generation SYNC entertainment and communications system (now known as MyFord) may now download an update which contains Apple’s Eyes-Free system for iOS devices.

“SYNC, Ford’s entertainment and communications system, was designed to be flexible and updatable, just like other mobile technologies, so our customers are able to get the most out of their smartphones while behind the wheel. Siri Eyes-Free is another great voice-activated feature that not only adds convenience but helps our customers keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel,” said Sherif Marakby, director, Ford Electronics and Electrical Systems Engineering.

With this update and Apple devices with Siri-capability, drivers can simply press the voice recognition button on the steering wheel to summon Apple’s virtual assistant in order to issue commands to manipulate data on their iOS devices.

Aside from making calls to people in the Address Book, send and receive SMS or iMessages, set an alarm, play audio from the music library, drivers will now also be able to look up phone numbers for restaurants and other points of interest, check the weather, use Maps and many other iOS features previously not available using a standard Bluetooth connection.
