Since its debut earlier this year, Ford has kept quiet regarding the full specs of the all-new Expedition. Now, the American automaker has released more details on their full-sized SUV, along with the announcement of the different variants.
The most significant detail Ford dropped is the powertrain options for the Expedition. Powering base and mid-grade variants is the familiar 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, but has been upgraded significantly to see a gain in horsepower and torque. For 2018, the EcoBoost V6 now pumps out 375 PS and a stump-pulling 637 Nm of torque, a gain of 10 PS and 68 Nm. Ford also claims that the EcoBoost V6 for the Expedition has the ability to run on regular-grade fuel.
Meanwhile, top-spec models get an uprated version of the said turbo V6. Power moves up to 400 PS and 651 Nm of torque if one opts for the range-topping model. Ford adds that this particular engine should run on premium fuel. All Expeditions are then mated to a newly-designed ten-speed automatic transmission. Drivetrain options include rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. With the upgraded engine, Ford claims that the 2018 Expedition can tow up to 4,220 kg.
Ford also announced the different variants for the 2018 Expedition. It starts with the XL and moves up to the XLT. The automaker then split the mid-grade models into two with the off-road oriented FX4 and the Limited. Serving as the top of the line model is the Platinum, which gets the 400 PS engine, along with more luxury appointments. All these variants can be specified in regular wheelbase or in extended form with the Expedition Max. Overall dimensions are measured at 5,347 mm long, 2002 mm wide and 1,935 mm tall for the regular body. As for the Expedition Max, it grows to 5,646 mm long with width and height being retained.
Besides the announcement of the variants, Ford further highlighted the FX4 trim-level. It packs off-road oriented dampers, seven skid plates, strengthened 18-inch alloy wheels and all-terrain tires. On top of those, the Expedition FX4 also comes equipped with electronic limited-slip differential, 3.73:1 gear ratio, and sand guards for the radiator and transmission cooler.
The 2018 Ford Expedition will hit U.S showrooms by late 2017 with the rest of the world getting it sometime in 2018.
