Ford Thailand has officially launched the 2015 Ranger, which it describes as "tougher, smarter and more efficient". This follows the official preview held at the Bangkok International Motor Show last March.
The only visible change in the exterior styling is the significantly different front end which mirrors the front-end of the new 2015 Everest. It gets a bold trapezoidal grill with projector headlamps inspired by the new Mustang.
The most significant changes are seen inside with the dashboard completely redesigned from its former G-Shock inspired look to a more premium car-like environment. The instrument cluster features a new futuristic dual-TFT screen flanking the speedometer. The center stack features an 8-inch touch screen display for the SYNC 2 infotainment system. The controls have significantly been reorganized with driving aids and all-wheel drive controls now located near the shifter. The door lock/unlock button has been relocated to the driver side door. The steering wheel controls have also been upgraded to perform more functions thanks to the new infotainment system.
Under the hood top-spec variants is the 3.2-liter Duratorq inline-5 TDCI carried over from the previous generation rated at 200 PS with 470 Nm of torque. An improved version of the 2.2-liter Duratorq inline-4 TDCI which is now rated at 160 PS and 385 Nm of torque; a modest improvement from 150 PS and 365 Nm. For base workhorse variants, they get a high-efficiency version of the 2.2-liter engine which produces 125 PS and 320 Nm of torque.
Transmission options remain the same with a choice of either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.
Ford says the suspension has been fine-tuned for more comfort and improved handling. In addition, a new electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system, also found in the new Everest. It promises precise steering with a natural and confident feel. Ford says "steering is light and manageable for low-speed maneuvering, such as parking, and precise at higher speeds."
New "smart" features for the 2015 Ranger include SYNC 2 in-car connectivity, and Park Assist for both front and rear with an additional rear camera for premium models. Carried over active driving aids include an electronic stability program which combines rollover mitigation and trailer sway control to keep the vehicle stable under rough conditions, Hill Launch Assist, Hill Decent Control, Adaptive Load Control and Emergency Brake Assistance function as driver aids and further improve safety.
Updated Ranger Wildtrak makes first public appearance
The new Ranger Wildtrak also made its first public appearance after its online reveal last month.
Aesthetics-wise, the Wildtrak gets a dark gray colored grill, bumper accents, door handles, side "air vents," and bed rails. The headlamps and tail lamps also get a similar shade smoked finish; similar to its predecessor. Ford has also given the Pride Orange paint finish a slight tweak.
While the interior also gets the two-toned orange theme, designers have decided to shake up seat the pattern to match the new dashboard theme. The driver’s seat also gets 8-way power adjustments. A soft-touch panel with orange contrast stitching has been added to the dashboard top for a more premium feel.
More Wildtrak exclusive features include a WiFi hotspot function and a MyKey system which can restrict speed and vehicle functions. New bed rail mounted truck real lights allow for easier storage and searching at night.
A new AC power outlet coupled with a 12-volt outlet is found behind the center armrest. The AC outlet can used to power a laptop or tablet computer, while the 12-volt outlet provides additional power connection for rear occupants.
