Ford to launch SYNC 3 infotainment system soon

Ford's SYNC 3 will soon be available as an option for the 2016 Escape, Fiesta

The American automaker from Dearborn, Michigan has just announced that the all-new SYNC 3 infotainment system will finally be making its debut in summer in North America. To be available as an option for the 2016 Escape and Fiesta, Ford claims that SYNC 3 features new hardware / software and will be faster and easier to use.

“SYNC always has been about providing a safer way for our customers to connect their smartphones in order to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Customers continue to tell us they want this technology, and they want it to be fast and easy to use – like a smartphone. SYNC 3 delivers on that request,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford Motor Company vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service.

Compared to the previous SYNC, the automaker states that SYNC 3 has an all-new capacitive touch screen technology that is similar to today's smartphones and tablets. With this, it has better graphics, a quicker response time to touch, has voice-activated commands and a 'pinch-to-zoom' function. As a way of reducing screen clutter, the home screen only features three main zones, Navigation, Audio, Phone.

The smartphone / tablet similarity continues on as the infotainment system now features what the company calls 'One Box Search' which acts like an internet search engine for looking up contacts, points of interests or destinations. Additionally, SYNC 3 can now also automatically update installed apps via a Wi-Fi network.

As always, Ford's AppLink will come in as standard which allows users to connect their smartphones to the automobile and control the apps by way of voice commands or on the touchscreen. Apps like Spotify and Pandora will automatically be recongized by AppLink and will then be displayed on the monitor. Other media apps that can also be displayed include: Music, AM/FM radio, SiriusXM satellite radio and news apps.
