It’s not very often that a car or racing themed movie gets an Oscar nomination. It's even rarer to get nominated for Best Motion Picture.

However, if you were able to watch Ford v Ferrari a few months ago, you’ll know that it was a really good movie. It was so good, that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently nominated it for four Oscar nominations, including Best Motion Picture.

To take home the title of Best Picture, Ford v Ferrari will be going up against serious contenders: The Irishman, Joker, Little Women, Marriage Story, 1917, Parasite, Jojo Rabbit, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Should it fail to bag the award, the historic racing film does have three other chances. Ford v Ferrari is also nominated for Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, and Best Achievement in Sound Editing.

Petrolheads who watched the movies in cinema would have noticed that the engine sounds are really good, both from the GT40’s V8 and the Ferrari V12. On top of that, the racing was very intense as well. If you noticed, there weren’t a lot of CGI used throughout the movie either. Specifically, all the cars you see in the movie are real vehicles rather than computer generated models. Christian Bale and Matt Damon also put on stellar performances as Ken Miles and Carroll Shelby, respectively.

It’s great to see a car themed movie being nominated for the most coveted Oscar. Other films with a significant automotive presence to be nominated include Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), and another was Driving Miss Daisy which won Best Picture in 1989. But no racing-themed movie has ever won Best Picture. Hopefully, Ford v Ferrari changes that by being the first. It would certainly be a good tribute to the late Carroll Shelby.

The 92nd Academy Awards will take place this February 9.
