Open-top motoring is now available for Smart cars after the company recently unveiled the ForTwo Cabrio ahead of its scheduled debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. Touted by Smart to give their clients the 'fresh air driving experience', the ForTwo Cabrio provides the practicality of a city car and the fun factor of an open-top automobile.
Design and platform-wise, the Smart ForTwo Cabrio still shares the look and chassis of the hardtop version that was first unveiled back in July 2014. The only differences that the cabrio variant has according to Smart are the: smaller B-pillar, a 'more progressive' tridion safety cell and of course the retractable roof.
The 'tritop' folding soft top will deploy in 12 seconds and has removable roof bars that can be stowed at the trunk, enabling the ForTwo Cabrio to be an authentic open-top vehicle. It measures 0.8 inches thick and has a rear windshield made of glass. Available colors for the polyacrylic fabric top include: Blue Denim, Red and Black.
As with most convertibles, the ForTwo Cabrio's chassis is more rigid as torsional strength has been improved by as much as 15% compared to its predecessor. This was made possible with ultra high-strength steel components, two torsional bulkheads and an inner tube in the A-pillars fabricated from high-strength steel.
The cabin carries over the 'Loop' design which is comprised of a two-section dashboard, a floating instrument binnacle and infotainment center, and a honeycomb design for the loudspeaker and tweeters. Other cabin amenities available in the ForTwo Cabrio include: Bluetooth connectivity, automatic climate control, cruise control and a multifunction steering wheel.
Like the hardtop version, the ForTwo Cabrio is available with two engines, a 1.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-three that puts out 72 PS and 92 Nm of torque, or the more powerful 0.9-liter turbocharged inline-three that generates 91 PS and 135 Nm of torque.
Both engines can be mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or to a 6-speed dual clutch gearbox.
Orders for the Smart ForTwo Cabrio will begin in October at Germany while first deliveries will commence in February 2016.
