What was originally a concept car is now an official production model after Volkswagen revealed the Golf GTI Clubsport ahead of its global debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. Made by the company to celebrate the 40th birthday of the hot hatchback, the special edition Golf GTI packs more than 260 PS along with an overboost function that allows it to have nearly 300 PS for 10 seconds.
Only available as a 3-door hatch, the Golf GTI Clubsport is painted in Oryx White while the roof is finished in black. Other colors will soon be available though the black roof will be kept as a signature feature of the hot hatch. Also seen on the special edition car are new front and rear bumpers, side skirts, a revamped rear diffuser, 18-inch alloy wheels (optional 19-inch alloys), rear spoiler, high gloss black side mirrors and the distinct red grill trim reserved for GTI models.
There is also a black trim décor on the side that pays homage to the original 1976 GTI, dual chrome exhaust tips, LED taillights and red brake calipers.
Inside the Clubsport GTI, the seats are partially upholstered in Alcantara while the steering wheel is completely wrapped in the said material. There are also new trim pieces on the instrument panel, center console and doors that give the car a unique interior finish, Alcantara trim on the shift lever, customized floor mats with red stitching and stainless steel kick plates with red GTI lettering.
Delivering power to the front wheels is a souped up 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that now produces 265 PS, 35 PS more than the regular GTI. Fitted with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox, Volkswagen claimed it can leap from 0 – 100 km/h in 6 seconds. Going for the optional 6-speed DSG transmission on the other hand allows the car do it in 5.9 seconds. Regardless of transmission choice, the hot hatch has a top speed of 250 km/h.
Perhaps the centerpiece of the special edition GTI is its overboost function which allows the hot hatch to generate 290 PS. The extra power will only last for 10 seconds however.
There is no date yet on when will it be available for ordering.
