Frankfurt 2015: Toyota introduces near-production CH-R

Toyota CH-R nears production phase with updated version

After first debuting at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, Toyota revealed the updated CH-R concept at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Unveiled by Toyota to preview a production model of the crossover, the CH-R still features the diamond-inspired exterior design but now features the practicality and use of a more traditional vehicle.

Still distinguishable with its unique aesthetic, the front end now features clear-lens headlights along with a simpler-looking grill. The front bumper and sculpted hood however have been retained. Over to the side, it still features the overly-large 21-inch wheels but it is now a proper 5-door for a more practical egress/ingress.

The rear section on the other hand largely carries over.

The two-tone color scheme from the original concept has been replaced with a uniform gloss finish as a way to further tone-down the concept crossover.

Platform-wise, CH-R sits on the same Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform which also underpins the newly-launched Prius. In retrospect, the new platform will allow Toyota to make vehicles that have better chassis rigidity, handling and ride comfort.

Exact powertrain details were not revealed but like the pre-updated CH-R, the crossover will be a hybrid vehicle that will have a targeted thermal efficiency of 40%. Moreover, the CH-R will have an improved fuel efficiency as Toyota plans to install smaller and lightweight components.

Toyota is hopeful that they will be able to reveal the production-version of the CH-R at next year's Geneva Motor Show in March.
