Just on the heels of the domestic launch of the all-new diesel-powered CR-V, Honda is prepping for the global reveal of its first-ever SUV fitted with the automaker’s hybrid technology at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The presentation of the Honda CR-V Hybrid Prototype will mark the official launch of the all-new CR-V in Europe; keeping the familiar body shape as seen on the locally launched model but will come with revised styling to meet European specifications.
Using Honda’s two-motor i-MMD (Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive) system, the Hybrid Prototype will use an electric propulsion motor, a 2.0-litre i-VTEC four-cylinder Atkinson cycle gasoline engine and a separate electric generator motor.
Completing the powertrain is a single fixed-gear ratio transmission ‘that creates a direct connection between moving components, enabling a smooth transfer of torque within the system.’
The i-MMD system controls the amount of fuel and electrical energy used for maximum efficiency by automatically switching between EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive.
EV Drive delivers zero-emissions by using purely electricity to power the vehicle.
Hybrid Drive draws power from the gasoline engine to run the electric generator, which in turn allows the electric propulsion motor to assist in driving the vehicle.
Engine drive uses only the gasoline engine but comes with ‘on-demand’ peak power ‘boost’ coming from the electric propulsion motor.
The all-new CR-V with a 1.6-liter DOHC i-DTEC turbo diesel will not be made available in Europe.
