As the conflict in the Middle East continue to propel global fuel prices skyward, carmakers are now hard at work in making electric vehicles charge faster.

Early in the year, BYD rolled out its 1.5 megawatt Flash Charger in its home market, enabling second-generation Blade Battery-equipped BYD EVs to charge their batteries from 10 to 70% in about 5 minutes.

Geely, on the other hand, is now preparing to unveil its own flash charging technology. And yes, it promises to charge faster than what BYD currently has. Geely’s Next-Generation Al Smart Charging Technology is looking to top up batteries from 10 to 70% in just 4 minutes, delivering up to 2.2 megawatts of charging power.

The Chinese automaker says the 2.2MW charging power was made possible due to the outstanding thermal control that keeps the battery cells from overheating during charging.

In terms of durability, Geely even promises the battery would last 3,500 charge-discharge cycles with limited degradation. This is the latest development in the charging tech arms race, as both BYD and Geely have surpassed Tesla’s own megacharger that puts out 1.2 megawatts.

The new announcement will come as part of a presentation at Geely’s Safety Center in Ningbo, China, but we’re yet to see which Geely model can accommodate this type of flash charging technology. More details should be available soon.
