Geely Philippines may have launched just one model when they opened up shop, but not anymore. Now there's two.
Sojitz G Auto Philippines, the Geely distributor in the country, has just introduced their larger crossover to pair up with the Coolray: the Azkarra.
Set to be a contender in the compact crossover class, it competes against the likes of the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4. It's also one of the few mild-hybrid crossovers available in the market as well.
There are two variants of the Azkarra available, namely the Premium and the Luxury. The Premium is front-wheel drive only and does not come with the mild hybrid system. Its turbocharged three-cylinder is good for 177 PS and 255 Nm of torque. This variant then uses a six-speed automatic transmission.
For those who want (or need) all-wheel drive, there's the top-of-the-line Luxury. This model benefits from the 48-volt mild hybrid system which also gives the Azkarra more power as well. Combined output for the Azkarra Luxury AWD is rated at 190 PS and, more significantly, 300 Nm of torque. It also ditches the six-speed automatic in favor of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
As for the hybrid system, it uses a 48v battery which then sends its energy to an electric motor. This electric motor then provides an additional boost of 10 kW and 50 Nm of torque. It's why the all-wheel-drive Azkarra makes more power than the front-wheel-drive variant. There's no need to charge it as it draws energy from the brakes and engine. This being a mild-hybrid, it doesn't have a pure electric-drive mode. What is can do is use the battery power at low speeds, and keep all auxiliaries on when the vehicle is stopped.
Both the all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive have similar equipment levels. Both have a comprehensive list of safety features, from stability control to 360-degree view cameras. Other standard safety features include hill-descent control and hill-start assist. Both come with LED headlights as well, and even a panoramic sunroof. Geely is also keen to point out the Azkarra's N95-rated air filtration and purifier system, and it's fitted to both variants as standard.
Inside, drivers are greeted by a full digital dashboard with and an expansive 12.3-inch infotainment system. Both the Premium and Luxury variants come standard with a power-adjustable driver's seat and a chilled storage compartment. Sound is then channeled through a hi-fi eight-speaker audio system. The Luxury model benefits from wireless charging and leather trimmings.
Prices for the Geely Azkarra are as follows:
2020 Geely Azkarra Premium 2WD: Php 1,438,000
2020 Geely Azkarra Luxury 48V EMS AWD: Php 1,598,000
Aside from the Azkarra, Geely Philippines appears set to release three more models in the coming months. On their official website, there are three silhouettes with “coming soon” written below these. There's a minivan/MPV, yet another crossover, and a sedan. If we'll be seeing these within the year, Geely Philippines has a lot of exciting work ahead of them.
