Geely may be relatively new (again) in the Philippines following its re-entry into the market in 2019 but, over in China, they've been around for 23 years after being founded in 1997 by Li Shufu. Still, compared to automakers around the world Geely is seen as a young company.
Yet somehow Geely has just driven past an important milestone: 10 million unit sales.
Since building their first vehicle in 1997, the Hao Qing, Geely has announced that they have sold over 10 million vehicles worldwide. It wasn't easy for Geely to pass the milestone either as the first year of sales only yielded 10,000 units. By 2003, they've managed to add an extra zero reaching 100,000 units sold. The numbers then tripled in 2009 to 326,000. With the introduction of the Emgrand series in the same year, Geely's sales quickly rose to 1.58 million in 2018.
As of 2020, the Emgrand models have already sold over 3 million units. Another model that has helped Geely reach their milestone is the Bo Yue SUV (locally known as the Azkarra). Since its introduction in 2016, the SUV has already sold over 1 million units and is quickly becoming one of the best-selling Chinese SUVs to date.
Also contributing to Geely's success is their international expansion. The Coolray (AKA: Bin Yue) is also very well received by the markets its launched in, and recently they even expanded into 7-seters with the Okavango (AKA: Hao Yue)
When Geely acquired Volvo in 2010, the two co-developed new hybrid powertrains, a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). To date, Geely's CMA-based vehicles include the Xing Yue coupe-SUV and the recently launched Preface sedan.
Here's the most interesting bit. Geely says that nearly half their 10 million sales came in the past three years alone, showcasing the rapid growth the company has committed itself to. With more CMA and BMA based vehicles coming soon (and arriving in the Philippines), expect Geely to reach 15 and 20 million vehicles in an even shorter period of time.
