If we told you to think of a stylish coupe SUV, what’s the first vehicle that comes to mind? It’s safe to assume most of would likely imagine a vehicle built by either BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or some other European marque. However, these European automakers aren’t the only ones offering a stylish and luxurious coupe SUV model. Head over to China, and you can also check out Geely’s take on the coupe SUV.
Called the Xing Yue, it is the first model to be built on Geely’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform – the same platform to be used in the XC40 and the upcoming Polestar 2 EV. Aside from being offered with a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) and mild-hybrid, Geely claims it is also the world’s first coupe SUV to be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Powering the non-hybrid unit is a 2.0TD four-cylinder engine that produces 235 PS with 350 Nm torque, and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive is also available as an option for the 2.0TD units. Meanwhile, both hybrid versions use a 1.5TD three-cylinder engine that produces 190 PS and 300 Nm torque. The mild-hybrid version uses a 48V motor for improved power and better fuel economy. PHEV units are offered with either an 11.3kWh or 15.2kWh battery pack, delivering 56km or 80km electric-driving range, respectively.
Design wise, the Xing Yue features a similar shape to other coupe SUVs on the market such as the BMW X4 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. Compared to other coupe SUV models, however, it does look more aggressive and muscular especially when looking at it from the front. It also features signature Geely styling cues such as the expanding cosmos grill and fan-shaped elements in the headlight and taillights.
Inside, the Xing Yue is loaded with a host of features including a digital gauge cluster and a face-ID system which automatically adjusts the settings for the mirrors, infotainment, and even air-conditioning. The same feature also monitors the driver for signs of fatigue and distraction. Other advanced driving features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assists and even a self-parking function.
For now, the Xing Yue is only being sold by Geely in China. It is still uncertain whether the model will be offered outside of the country.
