McLaren Automotive has formally unveiled the 650S, their fastest supercar yet at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. In addition to the intially revealed 650S fixed-head Coupe, the British supercar maker revealed the 650S Spider with a retractable hard top. McLaren says the 650S promises to redefine the high performance supercar segment and to provide driver engagement on the road and on the race track.

The McLaren 650S takes its design cues from the McLaren P1, beginning with the front bumper. The 650S is also designed with an integrated front splitter, available in carbon fiber as an option. The aerodynamic element of the 650S comes from the front air intakes and door blades behind the front wheels, a design taken from the McLaren P1. It is also designed with full LED headlamps that provides distinctive illumination. At the rear, the 650S has a three-piece bumper that is similar with the design of the 12C GT3 racing car and it also has a large diffuser.

Built on a carbon fiber MonoCell chassis, the McLaren 650S Spider needed no additional reinforcing in open-top form, giving identical handling and ride, and virtually identical straight-line performance figures with the Coupe. Weighing in at 1,370kg, the Spider is only  40 kg heavier than the Coupé, with a newly developed lightweight Retractable Hard Top and roof mechanism taking up the additional mass.

The two-piece Retractable Hard Top can be automatically raised or lower in less than 17 seconds, and can be activated while stationary or at any speed up to 30km/h.

Inside, the 650S features full Alcantara trim with a leather steering wheel. The interior of the vehicle has two options for leather: Arabica Brown and Midnight Blue. Lightweight carbon fiber trim panels compliment the interior finish. It also has a fixed-back racing seats that is based on the seat design of the McLaren P1. Adding to its interior design is the electric steering column and electric seats with a memory function.

The McLaren 650S Spider is powered by the M838T 3.8 liter twin turbo V8 engine that is capable of producing 650PS and 678Nm of torque. It is equipped with a 7-speed sequential shift gearbox. The 650S can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.0 seconds, a full second quicker than the iconic McLaren F1 road car. Moreover, it can hit 200 km/h in just 8.6 seconds, 0.4 faster than the Mclaren F1. The Mclaren 650S Spider has a top speed set at 329 km/h.
