A sports car that's specifically built for pure performance has officially made its world debut at this year's Geneva Motor Show. With a highly-tuned naturally-aspirated flat-six, six-speed manual gearbox and a lightweight spaceframe, the Porsche 911 R harkens back to road-homologated racing cars of yesteryears.
Starting from the outside, the 911 R gets an aerodynamic bodykit and a custom paint finish. It gets a new front bumper, black inserts on the headlights and a tweaked hood. In addition, the nose and rear design is a nod to the 911 GT3 according to Porsche. Over to the side and rear, it has Porsche decals, 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels, slightly altered rear bumper, retractable rear spoiler and a titanium exhaust system.
Lightweight materials such as carbon fiber and magnesium were extensively used throughout the sports car that Porsche claimed it is now the lightest 911 in production. Its hood and wings are made from carbon fiber while the magnesium roof reduces the 911 R's center of gravity. Its rear windscreen and rear side windows, on the other hand, are made from lightweight plastic. Rounding off the weight reduction are the rear seat delete and having the audio and airconditioning systems as optional extras. Total curb weight comes in at a light 1,370 kg.
Aboard the 911 R, carbon fiber materials also make their way inside the sports car. Both the racing bucket seats and interior trim benefit from the lightweight material while an aluminum badge indicate the car's limited number. A 'R-specific' GT sport steering wheel, short gearshift lever and clutch pedal, along with pull straps for door handles complete the lightweight finish of the 911 R.
As previously mentioned, the 911 R is powered by a high-revving 4.0-liter flat-six. It cranks out 500 PS at 8500 rpm along with a healthy torque figure of 460 Nm at 6250 rpm. Connected to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the 911 R can sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds before reaching its 323 km/h top speed.
Improved handling comes courtesy of rear-wheel steering while better power delivery comes in the form of a mechanical rear differential lock and a double de-clutching function that can be activated via an onboard button. Faster deceleration is also present by way of the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system.
Optional mechanical extras available for the 911 R include a single-mass flywheel and a lift system that can raise the ground clearance of the front axle by as much as 30mm with a push of a button.
