After teasing us with a silhouette of the next-generation crossover, Subaru has finally taken the covers off the all-new XV. Now sitting on a new platform along with a myriad of upgrades, Subaru claims that the 2018 XV can now take on a multitude of tasks while delivering improved driving dynamics and safety.
Borrowing styling cues from the 2017 Impreza, the new XV features a sleeker design overall while retaining the distinct exterior profile. With the Dynamic x Solid design theme, the 2018 XV features an updated hexagonal grill and sharper-looking hawk-eye headlights. Around the back, a new set of taillights give the XV a more upscale look which work well with the newly-designed 18-inch aluminum wheels.
Like the previous model, the XV still gets the familiar matte black body cladding on the front bumper, wheel arches, side sills and rear bumper which denote the crossover's ruggedness. Size-wise, the 2018 XV measures 4,465mm long, 1,800mm wide, 1,615mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,665mm. For those that plan to take the new XV off the beaten path, the new-generation crossover has a ground clearance of 220mm.
Underpinned by the new Subaru Global Platform, the 2018 XV features a more rigid chassis and new suspension components, as well as lower the car's center of gravity. In addition, the 2018 XV will have better straight-line stability, improved cornering and reduced vibrations from the steering wheel, floor and seats.
Also, the rear stabilizer has been mounted directly to the body, resulting in a 50-percent reduction in body roll compared to the previous model.
Inside, Subaru said they were able to combine sporty and advanced designs as a way to refine the XV's cabin. Placed at the center is an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. The multi-info display, on the other hand, now has a new screen for a clearer display. New orange stitching is also seen inside which spruces up cabin ambiance.
Other than that, the XV also benefits from more comfortable seats that now come with breathable seat covers and various shades of gray. Topping it all off is the smaller steering wheel that Subaru claimed will deliver easier maneuverability and snappier steering.
Powering the 2018 XV is an improved 2.0-liter Boxer engine. It now puts out 156 PS while torque pull remains the same at 196 Nm. It is also lighter by 12kg to deliver more power and return better fuel economy. The Lineartronic CVT was also given a mild upgrade as Subaru mentioned it now has a modified gear-spread ratio from 14:1 to 13:1.
Ever present is Subaru's Symmetrical AWD system. For the 2018 XV, it now comes with X-Mode which increases the off-road capability of the new crossover. Other driver aids present on the new XV include: hill-descent control and active torque vectoring.
Other safety tech that can be specified are: pre-collision braking control, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, high beam assist and the Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (blind spot detection, lane change assist and reverse assist).
Motor Image executive director Glenn Tan has confirmed that the all-new XV will be arriving in the Philippines by the third quarter of 2017.
