Remember the boxy EV concept that Honda premiered during the Frankfurt Motor Show last year? Well here is some good news about it as Honda recently announced that they have greenlighted it for production.

During a press conference at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show, Philip Ross, senior vice president of Honda Motor Europe, announced that a production version of the concept is on the way. In addition, they will also open order books in early 2019 for those that want to reserve early.

“A production version of this highly acclaimed concept will be introduced to Europe during late 2019, and in response to the positive feedback to this model, we expect to open order banks for the Urban EV during early 2019,” said Ross.

However, there is no word yet if other markets will receive the said EV nor will they open their order books.

In review, the Urban EV Concept previews Honda's plan of introducing a mass-produced electric vehicle. Its design is reminiscent of old-school hatchbacks, particularly the second-generation Civic with its boxy looks and round headlights. It also comes with thin A-pillars and a sweeping front windshield that provides a wide visibility for the occupants.

The interior blends simple design with futuristic touches. Instead of having individual seats, it comes with two bench seats that can be finished in different materials like a lounge. Wood veneer-like accents provide an earthy feel while the digital dashboard embraces modern design. It even comes with door screens that act as side mirrors.

Honda plans to reveal the Urban EV Concept in production form some time in 2019.
