Bentley held the global debut of the Continental GT3 race car at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The newly debuted racing machine is based on the Continental GT3 Concept debuted in Paris last year. The cars are hand-built at the Bentley facility in Crewe with technical partner M-Sport.
“The Continental GT3 exploits the incredible performance beneath the skin of every Continental GT. We’ve removed over 1000 kilograms of weight, reconfigured our 4.0-liter V8 to produce 600 bhp in race specification, and developed a comprehensive aerodynamic package to ensure that we perform competitively,” commented Rolf Frech, member of the board for Engineering.
A comprenhensive aerodynamic package highlighted by the carbon fiber rear wing, and carbon fiber splitter headline the exterior for weight reduction, downforce and drag reduction. The hood, bumpers, fenders and sills have also received significant modifications for both aerodynamics and engine cooling.
Under the hood is a race-prepped dry sump verions of Bentley 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing up to 600 bhp and mated to an Xtrac six-speed sequential gearbox and a transaxle mounted limited slip differential (LSD). Shifting is via a pneumatic paddle shifter.
Putting the car to the ground is a double wishbone suspension for the front and rear with race-spec coilovers to replace the standard air suspension. Stopping power is via ventilated discs couple with six-piston calipers for the front and four-piston calipers on the rears.
Most of the weight reduction was done via removal of the leather and wood interior trim as well as electrical and advanced refinement materials to achieve a target weight under 1300-kilograms. Despite being a race car, the steering wheel, door pulls and seat remain hand-trimmed by craftsmen at the Crewe factory.
The Continental GT3 will undergo developmental track work to prepare the car’s participation in the 2014 FIA Blancpain GT Series. However, it will join selected events this year once an FIA homologation has been given.
