Guangzhou 2015: BMW Compact Sedan Concept unveiled

1-Series Sedan previewed with BMW Compact Sedan

The BMW 1-Series will indeed have a sedan derivative, after the company revealed the Compact Sedan Concept at the 2015 Auto Guangzhou. Designed to appeal to the new-generation of car buyers, the Compact Sedan Concept is BMW's take on the four-door premium compact segment that carries a sporty drive along with the space and elegance of larger cars.

“The BMW Concept Compact Sedan reveals the potential we see in a compact sedan. It not only gives the driver and passengers generous amounts of space within a compact area but does so while providing the sporting ability you’d expect from BMW and an elegance otherwise only available in large BMW sedans. The quality and intrinsic value of the BMW Concept Compact Sedan are clear signals of our premium intentions for the car,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

Finished in Liquid Metal Bronze, the three-box concept features the familiar BMW silhouette, along with a sweeping hood and long wheelbase. The front end sports the distinct dual kidney grill, signature corona ring headlights with LED illumination and aggressive looking bumper. On its side, the concept gets flared wheel arches, streaks of character lines, 20-inch alloy wheels and the traditional Hofenmesiter window kink.

The wraparound L-shaped taillights follow the form of the headlights up front and is accented by horizontal lines that make up the trunk, bumper and quarter panels. Chrome trim on the rear bumper adds a bit of classy flair according to BMW.

The driver-oriented interior makes its way to the concept and is highlighted by prominent lines that converge towards the steering rack. Splashes of orange ambient light and interior décor (called Velocity Tulip) envelope the cabin and is contrasted by white-brown Nappa leather seats and trim pieces finished in wood and brushed aluminum.

Rounding off the interior amenities are a panoramic glass roof, automatic climate control system, infotainment system with an 8.8-inch display with iDrive and a headsup-display.

BMW also described the rear compartment of the concept as being able to seat two individuals in relative comfort, despite the compact dimensions. The panoramic glass roof extends all the way towards the back, granting rear passengers a great view. A separate rear climate control system and touch-sensitive window controls and loudspeakers complete the amenities behind.

Powertrain specifics were not detailed, though it is reported that it will be underpinned by the UKL platform and may be powered by a variety of three- or four-cylinder engines. The production version of concept is anticipated to be front wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive powertrain will be offered as an option.
