Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. recently completed the Fleet Edition of Honda Challenge Cup, a fuel efficiency driving competition that serves as an instrument in promoting fuel economy awareness in the face of fuel crisis.

Honda, in cooperation with Petron and the Department of Energy, conduct a series of fuel economy competition among different types of audiences to demonstrate how a simple fuel efficient driving style can make a big difference. In the most recent edition, representatives from different corporations maintaining a fleet of motor vehicles participated and learned the rudiments of fuel efficient driving.

The competition posed grueling challenges in both city and highway driving conditions using normal, day-to-day driving style with running airconditioning system. Natural driving environment was chosen for the competition. For city driving, participants were tasked to traverse traffic congested roads of Ayala Avenue, Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue and EDSA on a Friday morning at around 11 AM. For highway driving, participants tackled the North Luzon Expressway on the way to Dau, Pampanga. The team with the best kilometer per liter, generated by adding the fuel consumption within the 39.3 km stretch of city driving and within the 65.5 km distance under highway driving condition, wins.

A total of 18 fleet representatives showed their full support and put up a good fight. Participants were divided into nine teams, each team composed of a driver and a navigator. Two teams were tasked to compete in one of the five categories. The five categories represent different Honda variants including those with high displacements: 1.3 City, 1.5 City, 1.8 Civic, 2.0 Civic and 2.4 CR-V.

Sun Cellular team composed of Tophy Omega and Marlon Alberto won the 1.3 City category with an average fuel mileage of 16.1 km/li. Alan Rada and Jay Soriano of Philips Electronics and Lighting led the 1.5 City category with 30.23 km/li, Joel Perez and Elpie Mendoza of United Laboratories with 21.71 km/li for the 1.8 Civic category, Anabelle Granada and Mar Papa of Sony Philippines with 17.66 km/li for the 2.0 Civic category and Rupert Guerra and Rodrigo Almendral of Philip Morris with 15.54 km/li for the 2.4 CRV category. Smart, J.S. Unitrade, San Miguel Purefoods and Cathedral of Praise also participated and supported such cause-worthy activity.

"We are very happy with the results. We do hope that aside from having fun, the participants were able to prove among themselves that simple tweak in ones driving style significantly affects fuel mileage. Through Honda Challenge Cup, participating companies become our partners in spreading the word on fuel economy techniques and in applying such style especially to their fleet of vehicles. Every motorist's conscious effort in making fuel efficient driving a habit not only helps address fuel supply shortage but also assists in the reduction of CO2 emission being deposited into the environment." said Mr. Voltaire Gonzales, Sales Operations Department Head of Honda Cars Philippines, Inc.
